Regarding complement selection, the following three\ncomplement types are possible: recommend+V-ing, recommend+that-clauses and\nrecommend+NP+to-infinitives. Through the analysis of the complement types\nthat follow the verb, it was found out that the most frequently used syntactic sequence\nis V-ing, and that the least frequently used sequence used by native\nspeakers of English is NP+to-infinitive. This sequence is frequently used by Japanese\nlearners of English, according to our learner’s corpus research. 内容記述 | This study utilizes computerized corpora and linguistic software to investigate and reveal the gap between the description of verb usage in dictionaries for Japanese learners of English and actual usage by native speakers of English. This article aims to clarify the usage frequencies of verb complements, focusing on the verb recommend. Regarding complement selection, the following three complement types are possible: recommend+V-ing, recommend+that-clauses and recommend+NP+to-infinitives.
