Learning Communities and Teaching Communities in U.S. Universities - Three Cases from New York -
抄録
Recent reform in Japanese higher education requires students' active learning. However,
most higher education institutions in Japan have yet to develop the appropriate communities where the students collaborate with each other, get sufficient support, and engage to their learning. The authors, therefore, looked to the development of a learning community and a teaching community in U.S. universities, and sought to find inspiration from the well-established practice of their communities. Three Universities around New York (Wagner College, GCC, and SUNY) that are renowned for their effective curriculum and unique practice of the communities were visited in March, 2015, and the results of the hearings are hereby presented. Focusing specifically on general education, implications pertinent to facilitate students' active learning are discussed.
