内容記述 | The Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protests that began in June 2019 have no signs of dying down. With the “Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act” being signed into law by the U.S. government in November, the Hong Kong protestors have shown to the world that the movement is more than just local but also have stunning butterfly effects on China and the international communities. The movement is still unfolding, and any new developments are difficult to predict. Nevertheless, through organizing and analysing the materials they have collected so far, the authors intend to provide Japanese researchers with a better understanding of the current situations in Hong Kong and important debates related to the protests. This preliminary study aims to explain the background and development of the Hong Kong protests. Yamane, the first author of this paper, who was in Hong Kong in August and September, also shares his first-hand personal experiences related to the protests. The authors then discuss how the Hong Kong problem has become more complicated with the“intervention” by foreign countries. The last part suggests some important directions for further studies. | |||||
