We compared the contents of descriptions between the current curriculum guidelines and the new curriculum guidelines for elementary and junior high schools by extracting passages related to “lifestyle-related diseases” in “2. Goals and contents for respective grades” and “3. Preparation of an instruction plan and handling of content” from both guidelines. The descriptions in the new curriculum guidelines had more emphasis on lifestyle-related diseases, compared with the current curriculum guidelines. Also noted in the new curriculum guidelines were descriptions that expand the width of education, such as consideration of the viewpoint of eating habit-related education, promotion of linkage with ethical education, technology / home economics, and special activities, and promotion of linkage with family and community. However, no change was noted regarding the number of class hours and goals. As issues of the new curriculum guidelines, securing an adequate number of class hours and presentation of a specific method of linkage with other subjects were indicated.
