The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of radiant heat during outdoor running. The environmental temperature and physiological responses in a healthy male adult who ran between 7.00a.m. and 10.00a.m. over a period of 17 days in the summer of 2000 were investigated. The mean dry bulb temperature during the 17 days of running was 30.21℃, the mean wet bulb temperature was 26.05℃, the mean glove temperature was 38.11℃, and Wet Bulb Glove Temperature (WBGT) was 34.91℃. These temperatures indicate a high risk of heat exhaustion. The mean running time was 72.6 min, the mean weight loss ratio was 3.7%, the mean elevation of tympanic temperature was 0.54℃, and the mean heart rate was 129.1 beats/min. There was a correlation between the weight loss ratio and elevation of tympanic temperature (correlation coefficient, 0.749). The elevation of tympanic temperature was highly correlated with the environmental temperature. The correlation coefficient was 0.822 with the glove temperature, 0.815 with the effective radiant heat and 0.829 with WBGT.
