Comparison between In-Person and Online Classes in a Career Education Course

Increasing numbers of school classes were switched to online formats due to the spread of COVID-19. The objective of this study was to examine the educational effects of traditional inperson classes (2017, 2018 and 2019 school years) and online classes (2020 school year). A questionnaire was administered before and after a class to the first-year university students taking “The Career Introduction” class. The result indicated that,although both in-person and online classes had effects on the students to develop a clear vision of what they wanted for their future careers, this effect was larger in online classes than in in-person classes. Also, based on the student’s self-assessment of the skills learned in the class, students generally felt that online classes promoted their independent study skills more than in-person classes.Therefore, online classes seem to promote active learning attitude among the first-year students, resulting in a better insight into their future career perspectives. Further study is necessary to identify which programs for online classes produce more effects.
