 note = {It may be said that one of the greatest difficulties for Chinese and Japanese in learning each
others language, especially in spoken Chinese and Japanese, exists in the differences
between Chinese and Japanese vowels and consonants. While Japanese has a five-vowel
system (/a/i/u/e/o/), Chinese has a much larger number of vowel sounds, an eight-vowel
system (/a/i/o/u/y/ / / /). In the consonant system, the place and manner of articulation are
very different. By applying the methods of acoustical experiment and statistical analysis
and by taking the idea of vowel and consonant patterns into consideration, the paper aims to
explore Chinese and Japanese student’s language transfers of mother tongue in Chinese and
