In recent years, universities have been expected to cultivate general competence and attitude for students. These required competence and attitude are known as Shushoku-Kiso-Noryoku [Fundamental Competence for Being Employed], Shakaijin-Kisoryoku [Fundamental Competence for Working People], Gakushiryoku [Bachelor's competences], employability, and so on. Some studies focus on what competence and attitude companies require of their workers and how they gain insight into competence and attitude applicants have. However, the categories of competence and attitude do not indicate their concrete contents and contexts where specific competence and attitude are needed. In this study, through qualitative interviews with 20 firms in Nagasaki conducted in 2006, I analyze what competence and attitude firms require of college students, and in which contexts firms think to need them.
