Semistructured interviews were conducted for 30 Japanese companies engaged in overseas\nbusiness operations. The results show that only one of the companies sets criteria for language proficiency in the employment examination; the other 29 companies estimate that the possession of the high level of language proficiency is somewhat preferred rather than required and that language skills, which they think are posteriori in nature, can be fostered in training after job entry.
