The incidence rate of demented persons is estimated to be 3.1 to 5.8% of persons over the age of 65. There are many (several) hospitals and institutions which are trying to treat and rehabilitate these demented aged. However, the support system for the home-staying demented persons is not yet sufficient in japan. Suma public health center in Kobe has started a day care service program for the home-staying demented persons in Jan. 1986. The constituent staffs were organized by public health nurses, caseworkers, a medical doctor, an occupational therapist and volunteers. A total of 14 home-staying patients participated in this program. Finally, 8 patients and their families who consulted with us more than 7 times according to the program were used for this study. Through this study we observed that many demented aged showed a remakable emotional and social improvement and their families became more active and cooperative in the management of them than before the start of this program.
