The subject was a two-year-old child. At the start of the training, he could not read any written words except for the Arabic numerals. The experimenter was the subject's father. The experiment was consisted of three phases : the acquisition phase, the first retention test conducted 30 days later, and the second retention test conducted eight months later. In each phase, the subject was presented 40-50 words to learn under the following conditions : the words consisted of only Kanji, Kanji + Kana (verb or adjective ), Katakana, and Hiragana.
