 note = {This paper focuses on the discrepancy between the traditional images of “tigers” and “leopards” and the representations of these animals that we have actually seen, using the representations of “tigers” and “leopards,” mainly from the “leopard” freak show of 1860, as its source material. The historical sources used to decipher the changes in the “mantalitè” of early modern Japanese brought about by contact with large, imported animals were “Kohyoudoujimonn” and “Hakuraikohyouosanaetoki”. As supplementary historical sources, they also used ukiyo-e.
