We carried out a self-described questionnaire to evaluate the awareness of disease and learning needs in patients with lung cancer who were being treated on an outpatient basis after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. The questionnaire consisted of 8 items based on the previous questionnaire survey regarding the need to educate patients by Gertrud Grahn et al. (1990). The subjects consisted of 46 outpatients (31 males and 15 females) aged 66.6±17 years (mean). The duration after the diagnosis of lung cancer was between 6 months and 1 year in 36 patients. Chemotherapy was performed in 31 patients, surgery in 18, radiotherapy in 10, immunotherapy in 1, and folk remedies in 1. Ccnclusions: ① The items showing a low mean awareness score were \"activities of patients' group\", \"liaisons through which information is obtained\", \"utilization of social security systems\", and \"various therapies such as image therapy\". ② The awareness score tended to be higher in lung cancer patients who had undergone surgery than in those who had not. ③ The items showing high learning needs in patients with lung cancer were \"effective measures against pain\", \"pathology of lung cancer\", and \"normal function of each organ\". ④ Learning needs tended to be higher in the lung cancer patients who had not undergone surgery than in those who had.
