Objective: This study was performed to identify factors associated with perception of sexual consent among young adults at a time in their lives when they are becoming more sexually active. Methods: A cross-sectional study using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire was conducted in July 2024 among 280 university students in their first to third year at a school of health sciences, including nursing students, in a nonmetropolitan area. The questionnaire elicited responses regarding demographic characteristics, including gender and school year, prior experience of romantic relationships and sexual intercourse, self-reported recognition of sexual consent, and perceptions on sexual consent. Results: A total of 241 completed questionnaires were received (86.1%), and 228 with no missing responses were included in the analysis. The sexual consent perception score (10-50) ranged between 21 and 50. Gender (P < 0.001) and prior experience of sexual intercourse (P = 0.001) were significantly associated with sexual consent perception score, but school year (P = 0.096), prior experience of romantic relationships (P = 0.053), and self-reported recognition of sexual consent (P = 0.579) showed no significant associations with the score on the Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis test. The same factors were significantly associated with the score on logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: This study showed that there are gender-related differences in the level of perception on sexual consent, and that young adults with prior experience of romantic relationships and sexual intercourse have lower perception of sexual consent than those without such experience. |
