The grass puffer, growing to 15cm TL in adult is common in coastal waters of Japan and Korea. The spawning behavior of the fish, which takes place in littoral zones during May to August, had been reported from several localities of Japan, including the coasts of the Pacific Ocean, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Japan Sea. We observed the spawning behavior at two places near Nagasaki of different topographical and tidal conditions, Shirahama in Ōmura Bay and Akase in Nomozaki. The former is well protected and with rather small tidal ranges (max. ca. 80cm), while the latter faces the open sea and with big tidal ranges (max. ca. 3m). The fish exhibits conspicuous local variations in the mode of spawning behavior. The fish spawn in a small group not exceeding several hundreds individuals in our study sites, while in the other localities where the spawning behavior had been reported large schools consisting of more than several thousands spawners surge to the shore. The tidal and lunar penodicrties in the spawmng of the puffer are more prominent at the places with larger tidal ranges. |
