In the mosquito of Armigeres subalbatus, the diapausing larvae of the 4th instar generally overwinter in the breeding places such as fertilizer pits, at the bottom of which they are usually found. In order to know the effects of temperature on this larval behavior, observations were made on the movement of the wild-caught larvae in three glass-cylinders containing water of 5, 11, or 25 C at a laboratory of 13 C, It was found that the larvae went down to the bottom of the cylinder, just after they were removed into the cylinder with water of low temperature of 5 or 11 C, however, they also gradually moved down from the surface of the water to the bottom, as water temperature in a cylinder became lower from 25 to 11 C. From the present observation, it is suggested that in this mosquito, water temperature has some relations with the movement of overwintering larvae in breeding sites. |
