Following observations were found in recent years: i) There was general decrease in the number of livestock breeding farms and in the area of paddy fields planted, ii) In each prefecture, the density of swine farms and the percentage of districts with high rate of paddy fields tended to decrease. iii) Positive correlation between JE incidence rate and the density of swine farms was noted only in 9 prefectures still having developed paddy fields, which are the main larval breeding place of Culex tritaeniorhynchus. iv) These environmental changes could have resulted in the decrease and localization of the areas which are favourable for the production of Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, as well as the decrease of infective mosquitoes.
