Administration of GF caused protoporphyria in the hairless mice, that is, protoporphyrin levels in the erythrocytes and the liver were extremely elevated. Acute skin changes such as erythema, edema, blister and crust formation were produced by exposing the hairless mice with protoporphyria to 400 nm of light using the metal halide lamp. From these results, we confirmed that hairless mice of HR/De strain can be utilized as a model for protoporphyria.
