Nurses were asked which nursing competence they desired in new graduated nurses coming to work in the ICU. The questionnaire’s content covered the five categories of nursing competence: A. nursing skills, B. human relationships, C. professional behavior, D. nursing development competence, and E. autonomy. Nursing skills were further categorized into five components:【 daily living support】, 【observation and comprehension of the patient’s condition】, 【medical treatment】, 【drug administration】, and【 handling of medical device】.\nResults: The sample included 46 ICU nurses. Among the sample, the mean years of nursing experience was 14.6 ± 6.1 years and mean years of ICU service was 6.2 ± 4.1 years. The degree of demand for each of the four categories (in descending order) was C. professional behavior, E. autonomy, B. human relationship skills, and D. nursing development competence. In terms of nursing skills, ICU nurses desired drug administration the most. And not desired handling of medical device. After dividing the nurses into two groups based on mean years of nursing experience, the average score for each factor was compared between the two groups. The analysis indicated no between-group differences for any of the five categories.\nConclusion: The ICU nurses preferred that new graduated nurses have professional behavior (good manners), autonomy (fundamental competencies), and human relationship skills (the ability to work well with others) over nursing development ability (advanced knowledge) and nursing skills.
