It has seemingly a very simple mechanism, but it demands a lot of skill to adjust the each part of the plane. Therefore, it is not suitable for a general amateur and an educational use. The Japanese hand plane is one of the basic tools used by junior high school students for woodworking, and several kinds of improved hand planes designed for those students have been manufactured and sold so far. These improved hand planes are generally made lighter for easy handling for those students than conventional hand planes. So, in this study, the planing tests with various improved hand planes were performed, in order to make clear sharpness and handling of those planes. Air-dried wooden boards of hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa ENDL..) and white seraya (Parashorea malaanonan Merr.) were planed, and the roughness of surface planed and the deformation of the chip were observd and estimated.
