NHCAPには「難治性・再燃性で予後不良の肺炎」と, 「耐性薗による肺炎」の2つの大きなタイプが存在する. 重症度や耐性菌リスクの面では, CAPとHAPの中間に位置している. 治療に関しては, 「治療区分」が新しく設定され, 肺炎の重症度だけでなく患者背景をよく考慮して, 治療方針を決定する.
