Tong has adopted the hybrid-element concept and the complex variable technique for constructing a special super-element to be joining with conventional finite element for the analysis of elastic stress intensity factors for plane cracks. The super-element stiffness matrix has been developed for the crack-tip region based on the hybrid model, which is assuming the stress and displacement by use of analytical values near the crack-tip. In this analysis, some complex polynomials are employed as the interpolating function of super-element formulation, so that the convergence of the super-element stiffness matrix cannot be obtained accurately.
