本小文では，近代医科学がdiseaseへの対応に特化したのに対し，近代看護の本質はillnessへの対応であり，地域看護の本質はsicknessへの対応であることを論じる．そのために，本論では，疾病の3概念，障害分類と疾病との関連，健康と疾病3概念との関連，WHOの健康の定義，看護と地域看護の役割を再考した．人はdiseaseによって直接苦しむのではなくillness／sicknessによって苦しむ．またillness／sicknessに対するアプローチによってdiseaseの状態を改善・悪化防止・予防する治癒力を最大化することができる．illness／sicknessを「看る」ことはこの2つの意義から重要である． |

This article describes the role of nursing and community nursing as care for illness and sickness by reviewing concepts of disease, illness, and sickness, in contrast with physiological/biological health, wellness, and well-being. Bio-medicine started by discovering the concept of disease and by concentrating their efforts to understand the mechanisms of diseases, while modern nursing started by targeting illness. Approaches to illness are important because patients do not suffer directly from disease, but they suffer from illness, and because proper approaches to illness maximise the effects of bio-medical treatment. |
